I ride my bike several days a week for my three mile trek to work. We don’t have bike lanes so when I can I use the shoulder. When there isn’t a shoulder I ride with the path of traffic, which is my right. I ride my bike for my health. For our environment. And because I can. I am not a daredevil. When I need to turn I signal in plenty of time so the cars around me know what my intentions are.
Every morning when I ride my bike I am honked at. I am passed while on the shoulder by extremely narrow margins. Some mornings I am passed on the left while attempting to get into the turning lane.
My advice: if you are in so much of a hurry that you can not travel safely with a cyclist, leave your house earlier. If you think that a cyclist is not riding properly go here and read up on how to coexist safely on the road. Chances are it’s not them it’s you. You are bigger. You have lights and sounds and mirrors to keep you safe. Don’t be a bully, share the road.
If you choose to not educate yourself and continue to drive recklessly I will call you names and wave at you with just one finger. Not much of a threat but what else can I do. Choose to do the right thing….please.
