my dear friends the toes had a wonderful gathering this past weekend. it was soup party. stubby hubs hunk was concerned, never having been to a soup party, what this would entail. i was pretty confident that a soup party was about eating soup, drinking libation, and chatting with great company. mrs. and mr. toes did not disappoint. the soup was phenomenal. even dushie, who doesn’t like anything, had 3 bowls. of course, she ate the squash soup (it was in her approved color pallet), but this is going out on a limb for her, as she likes simple foods. by simple i mean she feels most comfortable eating foods with 3 ingredients (chemicals don’t count). she was happily eating this soup that had many more than 3 ingredients. at one point i think i even heard her humming. least you think i’m making fun of her, i should say that i LOVE this about her. she’s my kinda girl, quirky.
this brings me to the point of this post.
we’re sitting around the table. imagine that it’s taxi at the local skating rink. the girls are in one room and the boys are in another. really, now that i think about it, it’s just like skating at the overlook skating rink. no one was coming in to ask me to skate this night either.
but i digress.
we were sitting around the table chatting. i think the conversation started about kids. some how that got us to quirky people. MW was telling us that she’s not quirky, but loves to surround herself with quirky people. as is evidenced by her husband. we’ll call him the king of quirk. i love him. while, sometimes at parties, people don’t know where to look when he’s talking (a phenomenon i am well acquainted with) i like to encourage him to expound on his litany of topics. he’s got an artist’s mind, so it doesn’t take much to aid him in bopping from one topic to another. as evidence of his quirk, it was only last night that i learned what he does for a living. i always just assumed, that he was alive and present for my entertainment only.
i couldn’t get enough of watching mrs. toes and her sister mrs. russellstover. i love watching family members interact, because we all fall back to our least common denominator around family. that’s not at all a bad thing. we can’t help it. when you are around people who have known you your whole life, it is impossible to not be 10 again.
mrs. toes says to her sister, “it’s funny how i can’t stand to come across as not knowing what i’m talking about and you don’t seem to mind at all”.
mrs.russellstover responds with, “you mean, i don’t mind being clueless?”
mrs toes: uh yeah
while we were out to dinner the night before, mrs. russelstover was relaying a story that was hilarious. i told her i was going to write about it. don’t worry, i said, i’ll not use your names. she says what do you mean write about it…like in your private. maybe you needed to be there. but, in my house your private is your missy, you know, your down there, your hooch, your giener…got it. so anyway, she now knows that i write here, and i hope , doesn’t think i’m a stalker that has designs on stealing her best stories for my diary (what we discerned she meant by private).
oh one more, my favorite quote of the night that we had dinner out. everyone was placing her order for dessert. mrs. toes asked what the flavor of the creme brulee was. when the waitress answered with vanilla, she says, i’ll have that. i leaned over and asked her what flavor would have prevented her from ordering the creme brulee. to which she proudly responded, “oh, that was just for show” love her!
it’s all about enjoying those around you, whether you’re just attracted to quirky or surround yourself with people of like quirkiness. for me it’s all about the laughter. know that it doesn’t matter if i’m laughing at you or with you. well it might matter, but the point is, most times, unless you’re a total f-tard, i’m laughing because i get such joy from people who unabashedly share the funny in their life. this is the really important stuff. don’t keep it to yourself. by sharing our funny, we get to know how a like we are.
plus, if those around me keep sharing, i will NEVER run out of material.
