In our house stubby hubs hunk makes his own jokes. He always has and when they were little this had created a joke joke off with the kids. Sometimes when it’s really bad I tell him that he must have left his joke book at home. “That’s ok, I have it memorized,” He says.
Mostly I just humor him by asking him if he made that one up himself. He, with chest puffed out as if he has hunted and gathered the gem of joke through precarious circumstances, always responds with a resounding “yup”, a boyish grin on his face. Now that they are older they actually “get” his double entendres. It’s a golden era.
Example: we picked up some butter nut squash lasagna for the goose. She was humming as she does when she is really enjoying something. Stubs says, ” boy you sure are butter nuts for that lasagna.” I’m laughing for a very different reason than the punny. He said nuts, everything else fades into the atmosphere. The goose just happened to be taking a sip of milk when the “joke” was delivered. She sprayed, I got the mop, and stubs fist pumped his victory. I think he has be waiting since the kids were toddlers for this grandiose response. I have no doubt that in his career of joke “writing” this will be the bench mark by which all other jokes will be measured. For my part, I can only hope that this means that there will be plenty more buttery nuts to come. I could have shared with him the success I have found in this realm of fodder but it was precious to watch him stumble upon it on his own.
You see, I’m the funny one. Just ask me. I laugh all of the time. Sometimes I’m even joined by others. It was nice of the goose to let her dad have a day in the sun….I just hope he doesn’t get used to it.
