As a girl she was quiet and maybe a bit serious. She was always tough. As the ringer for my brother’s little league team she showed the boys how to play “their” game. She grew to be a caretaker in a job she loved, nurse. And another job she loved wife and mother. First a daughter then when she had given up on anymore, a son.
Then lightening struck. She got an answer for her dizziness and fatigue. CANCER. The first fight was insurance coverage for the pills that were going to save her life. The next was the fight against the jerk that is cancer. The pills worked for a while. Then when she was being tested for a study they found a lesion on her brain. Honestly? How could she fight the jerk if he kept changing the rules. But fight she did. And mostly with a sweet smile and heart warming giggle. Two house moves later, the death of her beloved dog, her daughter’s successful gallbladder surgery, our girl still fights. Against more than any one family should.
Then lightening strikes again. If you have ever said everything happens for a reason, please enlighten me as to the one for this next turn in their road. Our girl’s husband was diagnosed with the good kind of lymphoma. In the same way that ultra light cigarettes are healthy. Yeah, this loving couple is waging a war on cancer together AND separately.
Her response? “Forget date night, now we can get chemo together”. Always such grace and humor.
You may ask yourself what can you do? I hope that their story has made you ask that question. A small group of us are going to do our best to make their holiday season feel normal. Not extravagant. Just plain old normal. We want to ally their worries about bills and Christmas lists and decorating so they use their energy to wage war on their illness’.
