when i woke up this morning, the first thought that popped into my head is, what does a girl where to a gun fight? the answer, black and leather. i can play the militant feminist as well as anybody. the truth is, i have never considered myself a feminist. i think that because of the rights that have been won for women by the work of those that have come before me, i don’t have to. thank you to every suffragette, thanks to every bra burner, thanks to those woman who have kept the government out of my uterus.
today i go to the hill for woman and men whose lives will change if planned parenthood is defunded. i go to give them a voice. today i stand with planned parenthood. i have for many years, but today i hope you will stand with me.
my deepest frustration is that people have a visceral reaction to the name planned parenthood without an understanding of what we do. i do not mind at all if you know what the organization is about and still disagree with it’s mission. what sets my teeth on edge is people who say they are against planned parenthood because they are against abortion. i can tell you that nobody who supports planned parenthood is for abortion. we are for comprehensive sexuality education. we are for family planning, that’s birth control, for those of you who are unsure. we are for providing STI testing for those in need. reproductive health care for those who can’t afford it elsewhere. when you say you are against planned parenthood, you are telling our patients that you don’t think that they deserve access to mammograms and pap smears. that doesn’t sound like it makes sense to me. that doesn’t sound like the kind of person i know you to be.
if planned parenthood loses their title x funding, the only thing to change about abortions is that people will be in greater need of them. federal funds can not be used for these procedures but without prevention there will be more unplanned pregnancies. without funding, the litany of other life saving services will cease to be funded by our government. if i’m not mistaken, that falls under inalienable rights.
i’m not a feminist, i’m a humanist. today i go to the hill and lobby for my children…and maybe yours too.
as the coffee was seeping into my brain this morning, i was reading my emails. there was one form stubby hubs hunk with directions to D.C…..cuz i’m an idiot when it come to a sense of direction. at the bottom of my directions he said good luck and give toomey the finger. golly i love that man’o mine. but no, i’m not giving toomey one more thing. he threatens to take too much already. i would urge you, if you care enough to stand with planned parenthood to contact your state senators and let them know that defunding planned parenthood is not what you vote for.
http://www.plannedparenthoodaction.org to find out how. or better yet send a donation. you can choose to have it sent to your state.
